The Barkway Players welcome you.
The Barkway Players were
founded in 1992. We put on our very first Barkway Pantomime at Barkway
Village Hall on 15-16 January
1993. The 2011 show, Cinderella, was our 19th consecutive
annual show and thoughts are already turning to our 20th season.
People of all generations are involved. Many
of the original members still take part but we welcome new faces every year,
both on stage and behind the scenes. We also have a lively and
enthusiastic junior cast. We write our own scripts, and although these are often based on traditional
stories, we generally try to deliver an unusual slant.
For example, Puss in Boots Goes West set the ancient folk tale in the Wild West,
Treasure Island set the action in an exotic holiday resort with some swashbuckling pirates
thrown in; Jock and the Beanstalk gave a Scottish twist to a familiar pantomime, and
Goldilocks, Three Bears and a Dog borrowed from the traditional
tale and set it as an early 20th century "whodunnit".
Our 2010 show, Beauty and the Beast, set the well-known tale against the
background of 1930s Hollywood.
Our 2011 show - Cinderella
The Palace was packed to the rafters
for Prince Acne of Anstey's Ball. Every woman of marriageable age was
there (as well as quite a few who didn't quite fit that description). But
who stole the Prince's heart, arriving in a stunningly beautiful golden
pumpkin-shaped coach, decked with flashing lights?

Cinderella, of course, daughter of
Baron Stoneybroke, and stepsister to the less than beautiful Hernia and
Verruca. When she hurriedly left at midnight, accidentally leaving a shoe
behind, the search was on for the Prince's future bride. But would the
Warlock of Wyddial have his evil way first, or did he have a weakness that
Fairy Ermintrude could exploit?

All these questions and more were
answered at this year's Barkway Pantomime, directed by Ros Richardson, which
once again filled Barkway Village Hall for three shows on 4-5 February.
Carrie Pigott starred as the eponymous
Cinders, while Players newcomers Suzie Bates and Mike Collier made their
debut
respectively as Prince Acne of Anstey and the Wicked Warlock of Wyddial.
Judging by the lively laughter during
the shows and the feedback afterwards, it seems to have been another huge
success. Many thanks to everyone involved in the Barkway Players for their
wonderful teamwork in putting it all together. And thanks, too, to everyone
who came to support us.
